Attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD) includes inattention and hyperactivity or impulsivity.  There are several common behaviors connected to inattention including:

  • Struggles to focus or focus for very long
  • Doesn’t pay attention to details and makes careless mistakes
  • Struggles to organize things
  • Tends to lose things easily
  • Forgets easily

Impulsivity includes

  • An inability to be still
  • Talking excessively
  • Blurting out answers before the question is complete or inappropriately in the setting
  • Struggling to take turns
  • Interrupting others

I believe a diagnosis of ADHD occurs when the fight-or-flight reflex stays on in one’s body.

Have you ever had the experience of hearing a loud, unexpected noise like a door slam? You jump, your pulse increases, your blood pressure increases, your eyes dilate to take in more information, you tense, you look around for the cause of the noise, etc.

I believe those with ADHD have this reflex on most or all of the time. They are constantly scanning the environment for safety, even if they are unaware that is the reason for their behavior. They are distracted and in-the-moment all the time. Their brains don’t know how to turn this reflex off. There are things I can teach you that will help you to manage it.
